Two sailors hiking on a Hobie 16 with the pine shoreline behind them

Sand Lake Rec

Hobie 16

Two hulls, one trampoline, and the fastest way across the bay.

Our Hobie 16s live on beach dollies beside the south launch, ready to roll straight into the water. They are light, quick, and perfectly scaled to Sand Lake: enough room to stretch their legs, with a pine shoreline never far away.

A Hobie rewards a smooth hand and an alert crew. In a fresh breeze the windward hull lifts, the spray starts, and an ordinary lap around the island becomes the story from the weekend. Rated members may reserve either boat after a catamaran checkout.

Required to reserve

Dinghy Skipper rating

You can rig, launch, sail, capsize-recover, and land a centerboard boat by yourself, and you know when the weather says don't.

How to earn it: Complete Learn to Sail II, or pass the dinghy checkout.

The checkout: Beach launch and landing, crew movement, righting-line setup, capsize recovery, and a controlled reach with the windward hull lifting.
