A single sailor hiking an MC Scow with its single mast and mainsail across the lake

Sand Lake Rec

MC Scow

A Minnesota lake boat through and through: quick, flat, and happiest in a breeze.

The MC Scow is what happens when Midwest sailors design for the water they actually have: broad, shallow lakes, short chop, and enough evening breeze to make a light boat fly. The flat sixteen-foot hull planes early, the cockpit is simple, and the single sail keeps every decision in one sailor's hands.

It is a step up from the 420, not because there is more gear, but because the boat answers immediately. On Wednesday nights the MCs get their own start after the teaching fleet clears the line.

Required to reserve

Dinghy Skipper rating

You can rig, launch, sail, capsize-recover, and land a centerboard boat by yourself, and you know when the weather says don't.

How to earn it: Complete Learn to Sail II, or pass the dinghy checkout.

The checkout: Demonstrate bilgeboard use, controlled tacks and gybes, a capsize recovery, and a low-speed dock landing.
